You are probably familiar with the expression, “you are what you eat.” For those who are considering becoming pregnant, that saying should change to: You are what you eat, how you breathe, how much you exercise, how well you sleep, how you deal with stress — the list is endless.

Preconception care means taking care of your body and making nutritional or lifestyle changes if necessary, to both increase your chances of conceiving and then, improve your chances of giving birth to a healthy baby.

If you would wake up and decide to run a marathon, your body would not deliver the best speed and you would be at a greater risk of suffering health consequences. It takes months of eating the right foods, lifting weights and running in all weather conditions, to achieve peak performance.

It’s the same with pregnancy. The stronger you are before you become pregnant, the better it will be for both you and your baby.

According to the World Health Organization, preconception care can:

  • reduce maternal and child mortality
  • prevent unintended pregnancies
  • prevent complications during pregnancy and delivery
  • prevent stillbirths, preterm birth and low birth weight
  • prevent birth defects
  • prevent neonatal infections
  • prevent underweight and stunting
  • prevent vertical transmission of HIV/STIs
  • lower the risk of some forms of childhood cancers
  • lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease later in life.

In today’s rapid paced world, it can be hard to take the time to truly listen to your body and give it the preconception care it needs. That’s why we are offering a Preconception Care Workshop on September 29, 2018. The founder of Calm Waters Holistic Healing, a board certified internal medicine physician and a registered yoga teacher are combining their expertise to provide steps you can take immediately to get healthy — mentally and physically — before you conceive.
